I've been feeling the same way lately, I don't know if its a seasonal thing (during the winter I don't mind being cooped up since its crappy out, in the summer I need to be outdoors enjoying the weather) or if I'm simply feeling unmotivated.

I think the Louis Vuitton marketing campaigns in recent years have been pretty brilliant, the latest The Journey of A Man's Wardrobe (the website is also totally addicting) shot by The Selby is no exception. It takes a look at the lifestyles of some of the industries leading men around the world (NY, Paris, London, Shanghai and Tokyo) and features LV goods in action. Whenever I find myself in Kinokuniya Bookstore (which is far too often, it's right around the corner from my office) I make an immediate beeline to the craft book section. I could spend the entire day browsing through their extensive selection, but I haven't yet made a purchase. If I'm being honest I'm more than a little intimidated by the sparse directions (ok and slight language barrier) that accompany the gorgeous designs.

I found a really great post on The Purl Bee that's all about drafting the complicated pattern pages to usable pattern pieces. Hopefully I'll give it a go sometime soon, maybe start off with a super simple shift dress. Have you guys ever given it a go?

I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, I am still here. Things have been insanely busy for me recently, work is basically kicking my ass. We're right in the height of production for Fall '10 and there are just a million things that need to be done. By the time I get home from work all I really want to do is put on sweatpants and read (currently You Suck and The Girl Who Played With Fire).

On top of all that my boyfriend is graduating this weekend! Yay! In typical Elizabeth fashion I've waited till the week before to get new shoes, makeup, etc. I'm hoping things will start to slow down for me, or I'll just find extra energy (somewhere). I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, I really cannot wait for mine to start.

To enter you simply submit a design sketch complete with variations (as patterns usually come with a few design options), fabric and trim, full details are available here. The grand prize includes a trip to NY, but since I already work in NY I'm gunning for 1st place which includes a $300 Simplicity shopping spree (I would buy everything from here and here).

I've really been trying to do more touristy things in New York, recently I walked The Patriot Trail. The Patriot Trail is a walking tour that takes you to the major historic buildings in downtown New York. There's a free pdf online you can print out (just google New York Patriot Trail, it was the first result I got), it took me around an hour to complete, I really recommend it if you ever find yourself downtown with some spare time. Women have been crossing the line and shopping mens department for years, no question. But what about that other line, the children's department. When the Stella McCartney x Gap Children's collaboration launched adults openly clamored for the collection, Grazia did a rather humorous article in which an "average" adult woman attempted to squeeze into the hot ticket items.

I myself have dabbled in the kiddies department. Full disclosure, before landing my job in NYC I worked retail at Target, I spent many evenings hopelessly folding and refolding and refolding and refolding (etc.) towers of children's t-shirts and pants. I remember in particular envying the gorgeous chambray fabrics used in the young boys Cherokee line, I finally tried on one of the button downs and it fit (size up obviously). What about you guys, ever score any great kids clothes?

This short film, titled Lost Things was the result of a collaboration between the very talented papercut artist mrYen (etsy / blog / website), Angela Kohler and the gorgeous Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy. I think messenger bags are a really great alternative to the traditional backpack, and I don't know why but I always seem to find myself hauling around more crap in the summer than in the winter (sunscreen, flip flops, magazines, sunglasses!). I am desperately overdue for a new pair of glasses, I've been wearing the same ones for about 3 years now. I get really overwhelmed whenever I go into a place like lenscrafters (the options, the price tag!), I think I'll have to give Warby Parker a try, it's an online based company that sells really stylish glasses for only $95! Additionally, for every pair you buy Warby Parker will donate a pair of glasses to Restoring Vision, an organization that gets glasses to those in need.

Built By Wendy: Project 1 (Workin' Nine to Five)

So my Built By Wendy 'Workin' Nine to Five' dress is almost done. Last night I secured the edges of each of the pieces, sewed the darts, and attached the sleeves. I'm doing things a bit differently than the directions that came with the pattern, but when do I not.

This is the cf mock placket, my sewing got a bit wonky because I allowed myself to get distracted by a funny story my roomate was telling me, oops.

I don't have a serger (yet), but an easy alternative is just to use a zig zag stitch over the edge, it encases the fabric quite nicely, and I have yet to have one of my pieces unravel in the wash.

Today I'm going to get the rest of the notions required, a 22" zipper and 5 24L buttons, I'm excited to hopefully complete the dress tonight.

Beach Weekend!

I'm signing off a bit early this week, Mike and I are heading to the beach for an extended weekend! We're heading to a beach in Delaware which I'm aware will only be like 5 degrees warmer than where I am now, but I'm so excited to just get away, walk along the boardwalk, play in the sand and eat Grotto's Pizza. Built By Wendy: Project 1 (Workin' Nine to Five)

I think my least favorite part of sewing is all the prep work required when starting a new pattern. I'm really excited about the styles in the new Built By Wendy Dresses book, so its really taken a lot for me to take my time doing the required steps to ensure a properly constructed garment.

I've decided to start from the very beginning, Project 1 (Workin' Nine to Five), its a cute little linen sheath dress with a center front placket and belt. In the book Wendy recommends transferring the included patterns onto a more sturdy medium, I definitely agree with this, there's nothing more frustrating than trying to pin down those sad sorry excuse for paper patterns. Personally I use kraft paper (which I got from the dollar store), and while I'm transferring the pattern I also use this step to add the seam allowances which aren't included on the Built By Wendy patterns.

Another difficult aspect for me is making myself sew a muslin mock up of new patterns, again, Wendy recommends this and I (reluctantly) agree. It's kind of a pain, but lets face it, once you get into expensive fabric you really want to be able to resolve fit issues on $2/yard fabric rather than the $35/yard silk you've been saving up to buy. For this particular sample I made my mock up out of an old sheet, yeah I'm fancy like that. Another benefit of having a mock up sample is, for me, the way I store my patterns, I like to have an actual raw sample stored with the pattern (it's the Product Manager in me), that way if I revisit the pattern in say 6 months, I can just throw on the mock up and make alterations as needed.

Overall I'm quite happy with the way it turned out, I need to work on sewing darts (it's been too long!) but other than that it turned out pretty well. I plan on hitting up Mood tomorrow to get the actual fabric I'll be using for the actual garment, I'm thinking a linen or chambray. I'll be posting more photos as the style progresses.

Transferring the flimsy pattern on sturdier kraft paper will make cutting our your pieces much easier, it'll last much longer too!

Don't forget to label your pieces!

I find it easiest to store the pattern with the mock up, included in the pouch is both the original pattern and the transfered kraft paper pattern.

I am so very excited about this, it comes with 3 full sized patterns (sheath, shift and dirndl I believe) but also ideas for variations for collars and sleeves. The reviews I've read have been pretty positive, and I could definitely use more dresses for spring. I hope to share my opinions about the book and patterns once I get started, I can't wait!

I cannot believe NY Fashion Week has come to a close, I'm really going to miss having Fashion Week at Bryant Park. On my lunch breaks I would often wander down to the tents (I work literally right around the block) to see which celebrities and models I could spot, honestly it was fun and exciting.

So for the very last time ever at Bryant Park, Tommy Hilfiger sent his FW '10 collection down the runway. There are a lot of designers I respect and admire for their forward thinking designs, but as far as wearability (and ahem, affordability), I thought Tommy Hilfiger had a very strong collection. {images via NY Mag}

First off those shoes are divine, love.

Ok, so maybe not wearable, but I do love this skirt.

A gorgeous jacket, love the cocoon shape with the cropped sleeves.

Alexander McQueen was a true genius, season after season I looked forward to his shows, and he really did know how to put on a show. One of my favorite moments came at the end of his F/W 2006 show when he finished with the most fluid gorgeous hologram I've ever seen. I've been meaning to do this post for a while now, and for those of you that aren't familiar with rennes prepare to be amazed. I've been a huge fan and follower of the line rennes, created by the extremely talented Julia, ever since I stumbled upon her creations a few months ago.

I love the color of this pouch, it'd be perfect for locating the essentials in my purse (otherwise known as the pit of lost things).

A new Market Tote that I love, I'm so so so SO excited to see her new designs.

How gorgeous and perfect are these leather pressed labels, it ties in ever so perfectly with the rennes aesthetic.

Air Plants

Have you guys heard of these? Air plants? I do not have a green thumb, at all, the only plants I've been able to avoid killing is bamboo (which I hear is very tough). Apparently Air Plants are similar in that they're very resilient, they don't even require soil just a dip in water once a week or a bit of misting from a spray bottle. I like how creative you can get with displaying them as shown by Apartment Therapy. {via ethanollie twitter}

In Pictures: Lomo for iPhone

I've previously discussed my desire for the square photos produced by Lomography cameras, but lets face it, there are about a billion other things I need to spend money on other than another camera.

I know this is cheating, but boy am I loving the Free Photo Filters iPhone app. I used a few of the photos I already had, applied the Lomography filter and cropped accordingly. Lomography purists are no doubt shaking theirs fists at me right now but who cares, look at the coolness below:

Black Bow Necklace

I made myself this little bow necklace the other day, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. What do you think? I used a gorgeous black wool melton, its not too plush but still holds the shape, and a simple gold chain. I love it with my ruffled shirt and black blazer, it looks like I'm wearing a tuxedo.

Looking at my necklace frame I was surprised to see how much gold I had. I used to be a strictly sterling silver kind of girl, now it seems I have nothing but funky gold baubles.

Papermash Wine Tags

One of the gifts I got Mikes parents for Christmas were a few bottles of wine, now I don't know a thing about wine. If I stumble across a brand or type I like, then that gives me some direction, other than that I go by the label (eek, I know!). I ended up getting them a Beaujolais they liked which is lucky because I just picked it based on the festive red and gold label.

I wish I had known about these hilarious tags from Papermash, I know they would've gotten a kick out of them.

Miekewillems Notebooks

I'm pretty awful with notebooks, awful in the way that I collect them like crazy! I have a tendency to purchase notebooks when the one I'm currently doodling in isn't even half full, then the excitement of my recent purchase gets to be too much to bare and I move on to my newly acquired good (note: I'm also like this with lipgloss, I just counted and I currently have 4 tubes in my purse).

I fear these gorgeous products from miekewillems won't help.

This little cutie is a travel diary, its filled with mixed paper and envelopes to document your adventures, I think it'd be a great gift to someone who is going on a trip.

Tie Dye Redux

Even though at work I'm currently working on Fall & Holiday '10, in my personal life I am very much looking forward to spring!

I'm majorly crushing on these tie dye creations from Shabd Simon-Alexander. Once the uniform of dead heads, these artful designs are reborn with clean color palettes on classic shapes. My favorite is definitely the shift dress with the subtle grey marble effect. {via the cut}

I went out fabric shopping in the garment district, and I love what I came back with. I feel like the Sp'10 shows were some of the strongest I can remember, especially when it came to the colors.

In lieu of last years neon craze I'm seeing Sp '10 in a flood of sherbets and pastels, I can't wait. Are there any colors you're super excited to wear?

Clustered Light Cords

Kenzie over at Secret Pocket recently shared some photos of her new studio, while the room as a whole is a beautiful space what really caught my eye were the lighting cords she has hanging from the ceiling over her desk, how cute is that?!

I love the look of the clustered bulbs swinging freely over her desk, she mentions she has additional plans to cover the cords with a homasote board (so practical!). It really is such a genius way to bring in overhead light, well done!
